More than a week after a powerful earthquake struck Turkey and Syria, there were a few glimmers of hope on Tuesday after rescuers in Turkey defied the odds by digging three survivors out of the rubble, while Syria’s authoritarian president, Bashar al-Assad, agreed for the first time in a 12-year civil war to open up more border crossings from Turkey so aid could flow into affected areas controlled by groups that oppose his government.
The combined death toll for the two countries rose further yesterday to almost 36,000, following one of the deadliest disasters this century.
With survivors suffering immense hardship, humanitarian groups are calling for donations and aid to be sent to Turkey and Syria.
Reyland Johnson estate agency has responded to appeals for help by purchasing much-needed essentials, ranging from food to nappies, for the victims of the disaster.
Natasha Demetriou, letting manager at the firm, oversaw the donation.
She said: “I have no connection with Turkey. I am of Greek Cypriot heritage but I saw the pictures on television and just wanted to help.
“Not only have ten of thousands died but the survivors have no homes, no water and no electricity.
“I would just like to think that every little helps”
Agents are being urged to help the victims impacted by this tragic event.
